2013 Queensland Taipans

Martin Baxter Trophy Match Report

The competition between representative teams from NSW and QLD for the Martin Baxter Trophy was held on Monday 16 September 2013 following the NSWRA Queens competition.

An official function was held on Sunday 15 September following the presentation of the NSWRA Queens Winners and trophies. NSW and QLD team members were able to socialise together prior to the competiotn scheduled for the following day.

The competition was shot with 2 sighters and 10 counting shots over four ranges including 300, 600, 700 and 800 metres. Concerns with the forecast rain dictated a decision to start a following range as soon as the prior range was completed.

The QLD team made a good start with a 2 point lead after the first 300 meter range, with four team members shooting possible scores. This lead was extended to four points after the 600 metre range with another four possibles. The 700 metre range proved to be a lot more difficult and a good performance from NSW turned QLD’s 4 point lead in to a 1 point deficit.

The final range at 800 metres was held following a lunch break during a rain interruption. Strong winds and misty rain made shooting difficult, with buffering of the shooters a major concern. 16 minutes of wind allowance was required to get a shot on target. NSW won this final range by 1 point.

Final scores were NSW 1946.192 to QLD 1944.172.

NSW were delighted with the 2 point win, and were awarded with the Martin Baxter Trophy during a presentation ceremony following the match. Special mention must go to Duncan Davies (NSW) who shot a score of 200.25 and Peter Schafferius (QLD) with a score of 199.22, excellent scores in difficult conditions. The QLD team, although disappointed with the result, congratulated
the NSW team but will be seeking revenge in 2014.

The Captain is honoured in welcoming the new Team members James Spence, Phil Brook, Damien Earl and Steve Smith to the fold of elite team shooting. All showed skill and passion to this match and will be a force in Queensland Team shooting in the future...see scores.

One more note +Thank you to Mark Fairbairn our armour and John Schafferius for scoring all day in the rain.
