Wingham shooter Peter Thurtell, a fixture at top level shooting for a number of years, has broken through for his first Queens Prize in Brisbane.

Peter took out the 125th QRA Queens, against hot competition in a big field of more than 300 shooters at Belmont and also secured the Queens-Duncan Grand Aggregate.

Lowell blows away F Open field

Lowell Tillack - F Open winnerLowell Tillack - F Open winnerGoondiwindi shooter Lowell Tillack was a convincing F Open Queens winner with a record aggregate 599.62.

The first-time Queens winner had his single miss at 1000 yards. He said the stray shot was at 12 o’clock so he couldn’t blame the wind.

Lowell shot target rifle for many years then F Standard before moving to F Open a couple of years ago. He was pleased with a decision to use two rifles for the first time, 6mm for the shorter ranges and stepping up to 7mm for the longer ranges.

His wife Daphne “coach and nutritionist” also enjoyed the win.

Ipswich shooter Darryl Barlow completed a huge week with victory in the FTR Queens and Grand Aggregate. He was also a member of the unbeaten Queensland FTR team in the national teams championships.

Ravenshoe shooter Kevin Chatfield won the F Standard Queens from Brett Bond of Orange who also snared the Grand Aggregate.

To mark the Anzac Centenary year, a group of local shooters created interest by completing the Queens using .303 rifles.

Brian Long from Pittsworth shot 419.13 to win from Dave Hatherell, Gympie Kilkivan on 410.13.

Michael Collings has taken out one the most hotly-contested Duncan Matches at Belmont.

He and his wife Di are regular visitors to Brisbane from Te Puke, New Zealand.

He posted a winning score of 248.25 in the two-day lead up match to the 2015 QRA Queens Prize which his year has a field of more than 300 competitors.

Natives Rifle Club member Wayne Latham won the Duncan F Standard with a score of 287.18.

Qld FTR team hot at Belmont

The Queensland Rifle Association’s FTR team swept all before them at the 2015 national F Class teams championships held at Belmont in Brisbane.

The team captained by John Kielly and coached by Kerod Lindley comprised Mike Samuels, Beaudesert, Mark Fairbairn, and Nikki Slee, Cannon Hill, Jayson Mayers, Central, Daryl Barlow, Ipswich and Cameron McEwan, Dalby Tara.

They won all their matches across the two days of the championships, including short and long range aggregate trophies.

Mark Fairbairn also won the individual top score title.

Congratulations to Matt Pozzebon who has taken out the 2015 USA Championship in Camp Perry, Ohio.

He followed up with a close third in the World Championship which was won by fellow Australian team member Ben Emms from Lyndhurst, NSW.

Matt who stamped his future as a rising star shooter with a Victorian Queens is attending his second world titles.

He was introduced to shooting as a 12 year old by his grandfather at the Mt Vince rifle range at Mackay.

While studying mechanical engineering in Brisbane, he was a member of the University of Queensland Rifle Club from where he was selected in Queensland and Australian under 25 teams.

Matt now works in the Hunter Valley coal industry and is a member of the West Wallsend Rifle Club at Cessnock.
